A hilarious chat with Sara Longoria

It's Sara!

It’s always nice having Americans visiting our home town. Especially when those Americans turn out to be celebrities. Sara Longoria – well known for her appearance in America’s Next Topmodel (ANTM) – is here for the whole month and the Digi’s had the pleasure to catch up with her.

Welcome in Amsterdam! Any thoughts about Dutch people and their style?
“I’ve never seen so many harem pants before. Everyone’s wearing them, it’s like they never take it off. It’s such a fashion no no, but I see them so often in here and the way people style them, that I’d love to wear one too. How crazy is that?”

Where were you when you heard you were selected for ANTM?
“Well actually I was giving out condoms as I work for Planned Parenthood. I screamed a lot you know.”

Ever wanted to become a model?
“Not really. It’s just like a little short boy who wants to be at the football team but never really made it because he wasn’t strong enough. I was just like that: very alternative and I didn’t have a pretty face. It was like my face changes every single year.”

“I thought I was ugly, and I wanted to become a nun”

Really?
“Oh yes. You should see my high school pictures. My nose was huge, because my face was so small. And I was like this (Sara is putting on a weird face during this interview, we still think that looks pretty…). You could say that I really had to grow into my face’.”

That’s the weirdest thing we’ve ever heard….
“I thought I was ugly, and I wanted to become a nun. That’s all.”

So why did you sign up for America’s Next Topmodel then?
“In my senior year in High School people were saying to me ‘oh you’re so pretty you should be in ANTM‘. Well ok, that isn’t really true. Teachers called me pretty sometimes, and my mom did too. And my classmates were like ‘oh, you’re so tall and thin, you should be a topmodel‘. But I never wanted to have a shallow life…. But in my freshmen year in College I did a photoshoot and people liked that. It was fun but I think I sucked at it, I never want to see those pictures again, I’m very embarassed by it right now. Maybe you can find it on a Flickr.com archive.”

“Tyra said my face is ‘one in a million”

How was that: entering the ANTM’s house?
“Really weird, because on the first day the crew kept on telling us ‘not to break the microphone because they’re f*cking expensive‘. I had to get used of the camera’s: it’s weird when you wake up and there’s a camera in your face. Even when you take a shower. But they could even film me when I was taking a sh*it. Why would people film that? You never gonna use that on the show, right? So I had to pretend the camera’s weren’t there, but sometimes I thought ‘oh my god, does my hair look good‘?”

So did you and the other girls were OK with each other?
“I was like, as long if you’re not farting on me, I’m good!”

How was Tyra?
“She is very professional, kind, and I think she liked me a lot. She pretended that she was mad at me during my elimination, but then I made her laugh. She said my face is ‘one in a million‘.”

How did you feel after the elimination?
“I felt sad, because I didn’t want to go home, and I thought I could do so much more. But they didn’t send me back home immediately. I stayed in a hotel with all the others who were eliminated before me. I stayed in a gorgeous hotel in West-Hollywood for 2,5 weeks.”

Being recognized: how does that feel?
“Well, in my area people call me ‘the Valley Sweatheart’ and ‘the one who made it out’.”

Ah, that’s so nice!
“Well, not at all f you know those people didn’t want anything to do with me before ANTM…”

What do you think of Dutch fashion?
“I went to the Amsterdam International Fashion Week and visited some shows. I see that designers are downgrading their collection and making it a lot more commercial. I liked the shows…”

Which show did you do like? For real!
“I liked young designers like Pauline van Dongen, Generation 12, Jan Boelo. Winde Rienstra and GOMES ESSER. I walked down the catwalk for this last one.”

“He makes me food, helps me with the laundry and I’ll make sure I don’t have to do that…”

You’re a feminist, we love independent women. Tell us more about it.
“Where I live, birth control and using condoms and even the talk of that is very scandalous. I always hear that in church. They rather get young people pregnant. During the end of high school I had 10 mothers in my class. And many others married before graduation. And after that they just drop out of school. Such a waist. In Texas they’re very old fashion: the traditional role of women is being a good mother and a wife. If you have the wrong boyfriend he could tell you to drop out of school and keep asking you ‘what kind of woman you are’ if you refuse. I live my life not to be a traditional Mexican woman.”

How is your boyfriend then?
“Different than all the others. He’s really supportive and I’m happy with that. He makes me food, helps me with the laundry and I’ll make sure I don’t have to do that… He never asked me to drop out of college or quit modeling what most of the boyfriends would have done.”

“I don’t want to be ‘someone’s wife’ or ‘someone’s daughter’. I want to be me”

Would you like to marry him?
“Oh yes, but not now. Maybe when I’m 25 or something. And then we marry and have babies.”

You work at Planned Parenthood. Tell us more about that.
“I work at Planned Parenthood and I once gave a presentation about sexuality. I asked people to draw a vagina and more than half of the people drew it wrong! They didn’t know anything. And afterwards someone came to me and ask me how to get pregnant. She said: ‘I’m 24 years and I want to have a baby before I turn into and old maid’. And I was like: ‘You’re 25 years old b*tch, how come you don’t know that. I don’t want to be ‘someone’s wife’ or ‘someone’s daughter’. I want to be me. I’d definitely raise my daughter the same way.”

Any favorite stores in Amsterdam?
“H&M! From underwear to dresses, love it.”

What’s your style?
“I little bit grungy, like a rock star. And I love my combat boots, I wear them every day.”

And what about your Betsy Johnson knee socks you’re wearing now?
“Oh, I’m just wearing them because I didn’t shave my legs.”

“Hopefully someday I”ll never have to worry about money. But I’m pretty happy for someone who’s broke”

Oh god, so it’s true: feminists don’t shave their legs..
“Well, not true at all. I’m just lazy…”

Someone who you admire?
“Anita Franco, she’s a musician and singer songwriter who started their own record label. She’s kind of a bad *ss mother f*cker.”

How do you see yourself in ten years?
“F*cking rich I hope. People say money don’t buy you happiness. I’m not saying any romantic thing about poverty. I just wanna be wealthy and taking care of my family and myself.  I don’t want to worry about money when my car breaks down. Hopefully someday I”ll never have to worry about money. But I’m pretty happy for someone who’s broke.”

Well, join the club!
“People keep on telling me ‘oh you’re a model, your living the glamorous life‘ but that’s not true. I don’t even have a television! ”

Any great plans for the future?
“Being a successful model. I want people to say just ‘Sara’, like ‘Naomi’ ‘Gisele’ or ‘Kate’. That people don’t have to say my last name anymore. I’d love that. And ofcourse I want to be on the cover of Vogue.”

“Love that: putting my hand into the dirt”

Which Vogue?
“Any Vogue, please. So I can take it to my high school reunion.”

Any other plans?
“A sexual advise talk show on television.”

You should do that!
“Yes, it’s my secret talent. I know everything about it, and lots of people are ridiculously uninformed, so I’d like to change that. ”

Any things we don’t know about you?
“I’m a big reader. I love the Harry Potter books, I could really say the HP books defined my childhood. I’m a dork, I know. I also like gardening a lot. I’d like to have a spice garden one day complete with gardening shoes, gardening hat. Love that: putting my hand into the dirt. And I cut my own hair a lot. That’s it, I’m pretty boring…”
