Easy 10-Step Manicure

Want to have perfect nails but don’t want to spend a bundle at the salon? No worries! With the right tools and our easy how-to guide, a manicure at home is super easy to do – and your nails will be totally gush-worthy.

Step one: Gather all the items you will need, so you have everything easily accessible once you begin. You’ll need: a bowl of warm (soapy) water, towel, cuticle clippers, nail file, a metal or wooden cuticle stick, nail polish remover, Q-tips and three polishes: base coat, colour and top coat.

Step two: Soak your hands for about 10 minutes in the bowl of warm water. I normally add bath oil, suds or Epsom salts to further soften and moisturize my skin.

Step three: Remove hands and pat dry with towel. Use the metal or wooden stick to gently push back your cuticles.

Step four: Use cuticle clippers to gently remove excess skin around the cuticles. You should never attempt to do this unless you’ve soaked your hands first; it’s easier to clip softened skin and you don’t want to cut too far.

Step five: File your nails to desired length and shape. Only move the file in one direction – fanning it back and forth will weaken your nails.

Step six: Paint a layer of base coat on your nails.

Step seven: Once dry, apply two layers of your desired colour. Be sure to wait at least 10 minutes between so the first application has a chance to dry. This will decrease the chances of smudging.

Step eight: Apply top coat or quick try polish. One layer is enough.

Step nine: Carefully dip a Q-tip in nail polish remove and use to remove any excess polish that may have landed on your skin.

Step ten: Voila! Your nails are ready. A few hours later, once your nails are 100 per cent dry, you can moisturize with a hand cream or – if your hands are really lacking hydration – olive oil! It’s natural and will leave your hands super smooth once absorbed.
