Thursday Treat: Herengracht

Herengracht_LekkerLokaalAt Herengracht Restaurant & Bar they don’t believe in diets. Therefore they decided to launch an inspiring new concept in their venue, called ‘Eten is het nieuwe diëten’ in Dutch, which can be loosely translated into ‘Eating is the new diet’.

The coming weeks there will be a different three course meal served every week, composed by different nutritionists and foodies. Among them Kris Verburgh, author of the popular book ‘The food hourglass’, and wild plant forager Edwin Florès.

Last week, when we visited The Herengracht, the menu was created by local food expert Jobien Groen. We started with an original – and very tasteful – aperitif: prosecco with guldenwater, an authentic Amsterdam liquor with gold leaf.

These are the dishes we’ve got served:

Starter
Tarte tatin with leek and skeapsrond (a local fresh sheep’s milk cheese)
Main
Baked haddock, jerusalem artichoke gnocchi with mint and walnut, jerusalem artichoke foam
Dessert
Apple clafoutis with rosemary and thyme ice cream

We did not only enjoy our meal and the fine wines served with it, but also the enthusiastic host at the restaurant who could barely hide his excitement over the new concept. “We want to show that fresh and healthy food can be delicious. Local food is amazing to cook with and we like to invite people to come and discover all it’s possibilities at our restaurant.”

Curious?
Go to Herengracht Bar & Restaurant (Herengracht 435, 1017 BR Amsterdam, 020-6162482) between today and february 16th. You can find a schedule with the different nutritionists here.
