Situated in the core of the Big Apple, but not your average kind of hotel; it’s a different hospitality experience. On April 10th, CitizenM officially opened its first US property.
The concept is already well installed in the Netherlands and the UK, and one will soon open in Paris at Charles de Gaulle airport. But first: New York City. During a press lunch, Robin Chadha -Chief Marketing Officer of CitizenM- told us some of the ins and outs about the NYC hotel.
CitizenM New York counts 230-rooms and offers innovative amenities, including self check-in, completely customizable guest rooms via touchscreen MoodPads, communal workspace and Apple iMac stations, a design partnership with renowned Swiss furniture brand Vitra, an outpost of Amsterdam’s leading creative bookstore MENDO, several outdoor spaces including a rooftop bar with panoramic views including an indoor space, fireplace and outdoor terrace that can accommodate up to 155, serving cocktails curated by mixologist Mayur Subbarao, daily cocktail punches and snacks. Food can be found at canteenM – a 24 hour grab & go-style cafeteria featuring an open kitchen with a full-service cocktail & coffee bar.
The hotel lobby acts as a central hub for guests with an oversized living room design, soaring 26-foot ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves showcasing an eclectic mix of art and objects from around the world. Like its sister properties, citizenM New York is home to a stunning collection of contemporary art and photography, including two commissioned pieces – a Julian Opie lobby installation and a Jen Liu exterior piece wrapping around the façade of the building — as well as works by Andy Warhol, Daido Moriyama, Florian Süssmayr and David LaChapelle.
So far so good. Well, no. It doesn’t stop there. The list of features and amenities goes far beyond. Take the music; popshop! djs and internationally acclaimed music lifestyle curator Michaelangelo L’Acqua are responsible for the tunes in the lobby and rooftop bar. In the rooms however, you’ll find customizable playlists by 22tracks. This music discovery service is curated by local top DJs from Amsterdam, Brussels, London and Paris.
CitizenM also has a scent developed by Alessandro Gualtieri from Nasomatto. He’s an Italian perfumer known as ‘The Nose’. His unique and independent style of perfumery has attracted some of the top names in fashion. Remember that once you’ve passed the treshold, you’ll inhale a distinct CitizenM fragrance, especially designed to make you feel at home.
In the Food & Beverage department the offerings were locally sourced from select New York shops such as Puddin’ NYC, Stone Street Coffee, Brooklyn Gin, Mast Brothers Chocolate and Il laboratoria del Gelato. May it occur that you feel you have indulged yourself too much with the food, you can go train at the Gym with city views and outdoor yoga terrace.
