Column: Downtown Daddy

DD_column1_1Always wondered how men experience fatherhood? Well, we’ve found a cool dad to share his adventures with us. May we present to you Mister Daddy Cool Maurice Anajuku.

It’s been almost a year since Ava-Ilésha was born and I got to say I think I am doing a good job at being her Daddy… How can I think that you may ask? Do I have any proof? Any exam I take after being a dad for 10 months that gives me a rating? It’s a lot simpler than that… It’s Ava who has given her judgment. Even today as I came home in a rush to catch Netherland’s second World Cup game, the moment she made eye contact with me her eyes lit up! I got pulled in, and instead of catching the first minutes of the game, I went straight to her. The next thing I knew her body language was asking me for a hug! 10 months and she is already asking me for a hug! I think she’s happy with me as her dad.

So what is it that made me Ava’s número uno dad (Yes that is a dad trying to be cool and hip)? It wasn’t as if there was a daddy class I could follow, the only thing I had were the memories of growing up with my dad and Hollywood movies. I even scoured the internet for a day looking for that hip daddy blog, but all I got was mommy blogs about which stroller matches which Louboutin, or about the 10 day horror delivery. I am serious, there were a few blogs of dads sharing their experiences, but nothing that spoke to the young international dad I am, or so I am lead to believe.

So that was my ‘AHA’ moment! After 6 years of posting my life via Ajanaku.com, it was time to turn to another chapter in my life, DowntownDaddy.com. It’s simple, a site for dads by a dad. From fashion for the baby to style inspiration for Fathers. From stroller reviews to toys. But the section I feel gives a bit of guidance to all the dads around the world is my Daddy Survival section. Simple posts that help with the myth of diaper changing or even what things to expect as a new dad, it’s what I wanted when my wife was expecting…. Something to be informative but also make me laugh.

And that’s what fatherhood is all about…. Making yourself, but most importantly your kid laugh. It’s about create a home they feel safe in, but gives them the freedom to explore and enjoy the world. Ava is a happy baby.. Or is it toddler at 11 months? I mean she even laughs when I wave to her… So is it genetics? Could be, but in the end it’s all about having fun with Ava, her mother and the many friends we have. After all isn’t it laughter that makes the world go round?

So Daddies this is your calling! Go out and make your kids laugh! If you do that, then you are certainly playing a part in bringing peace and laughter to the world! Yep, not only are you a superdad, but you are also a peacetrooper! Let’s do this!

Captain DowntownDaddy Superdad Peacetrooper Ajanaku.
