Treat Yourself: Het Massagehuys

photo 1Is it just me or has life been particularly busy lately? Between work, social events and family commitments, it seems like I’ve had no time to call my own for relaxation.

Here’s where Het Massagehuys can help. Founded nearly a year ago in Amsterdam West, it’s a massage spa that offers amazing treatments in a design-savvy space – in short, it’s the perfect place to escape the city and unwind.

“We’re about running an organic, sustainable and honest business,” says Jaap Spreeuwenberg, owner of Het Massagehuys. “A good massage can not only relive aches and pains, but readjust the flow of energy in your body. We combine that philosophy with our homemade oils, and we consider the effects that aromatherapy and active plant ingredients can have on the body when absorbed. We finish our treatments with a cup of organic tea, which helps enhance the effects of the massage and oil.”

Het Massagehuys offers a fantastic menu, from deep-tissue and sports massages to authentic Asian, detox, and prenatal (which can be difficult to find in the city). I was lucky enough to have a stress relief treatment with Spreeuwenberg’s wife, who is originally from Thailand, and has that special “Thai touch” in her technique.

Each massage is paired with a dedicated body oil, handmade by Spreeuwenberg himself; he learned about oil mixing and infusion while in Thailand, and uses all natural and organic ingredients like sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, sandalwood, lavender, eucalyptus, mint and basil.

“Blue chamomile is very relaxing, it’s like drinking 30 cups of chamomile tea at once,” Spreeuwenberg explains, “while nutmeg is great for the immune system and circulation. In our detoxifying massage, we use a mix of juniper berry, ginger and parsley, which helps to clean the body in a balanced way.”

Each massage is a minimum of one hour, while longer treatments are available upon request. All are for the full body, as Spreeuwenberg explains how the body is interconnected; for example, shoulder pain won’t disappear from massaging only the shoulder area, but from treating other pressure points throughout the body.

Het Massagehuys’ space embraces simplistic Dutch design, with beautiful fabric massage tents offset by hardwood details. Each guest is assigned a personal locker for safe storage of belongings during the treatment.

Body oils are available for individual purchase so you can take them home with you.

Het Massagehuys is located at Jan Evertsenstraat 110.
