Column: My name is Yaela and I’m a work-o-holic

Yaela_column1_1I figured I’d start with a formal introduction. That seems like the right thing to do. The proper thing. If there was ever one thing my mother taught me, it was to always, ALWAYS be polite. So, here goes nothing…

Hi! My name is Yaela Betsalel and I’m a work-o-holic. There, I said it. Boy, that feels good! So, having said that, let’s get to business. Who am I? And why are you reading this? I can help you with that first question. As for the second, I’ll let you be the judge of that.

I am a girl, a mother, a business owner, a wife, a (not so great) friend and a lover of all things hospitality related. Food, wine, cocktails, hotels, restaurants, the works. You name it, I’m a sucker for it.

Luckily, I’ve made this obsession into my work so I even have a legitimate excuse for all this excessive eating out and day-time drinking. I call it work. Oh, how I love my job!

I own a marketing & PR agency specialized in the hospitality industry; Typhoon Hospitality. Basically what we do is help our clients (restaurants, hotels, bars, liquor brands, wines and so on…) do funky, creative stuff to help build their brand. Through this blog I would like to share a sneak-peak into my world with you. Not because I think I’m so cool – au contraire!- because I’d like to show you the world behind the glitter & glamour. The child that throws up on me after I come home from a fancy restaurant opening, the hundreds of goodiebags I fill by hand and the holes in my socks in my Louboutin boots.

I hope you’ll follow me on my bumpy and boozy quest to find some work/life balance.

FOTO 2:You’re never too old to learn. The Typhoon team gladly hosted and joined this amazing IZAKAYA Masterclass. The IZAKAYA team told us all about Japanese cocktails, exotic spirits like shochu and the principles of umami. I wish collage had been this tasty.

FOTO 3:Trying to run a business, win mom-of-the-year awards and still be the perfect wife is simply impossible some days. This day I was reaching the ends of my superpowers and called for rescue. I called the one-and-only guy who can make any night a success for but the little and big inhabitants of the Betsalel residence; The Butcher. Gosh, I really do love this guy.

FOTO 6:In celebration of carnaval, my youngest (3) was allowed to come to daycare dressed up. Of course she wanted to go as ‘Hello Kitty’ who she has dubbed yolo kitty. Pink dress, glittershoes, the whole shebang. However there was one thing missing. She asked me in her sweetest voice, dripping with ‘suck up’, if I’d paint her face. Running late for my meeting as I was, I couldn’t resist. After all, the physiatrist bills later would not add up to the costs of me running a little late. The result however, was a bit disturbing. As the husband kindly pointed out: My Yolo Kitty looked more like a Zombie kitty. Little S thankfully didn’t seem to notice all the awkward stares on the street and twirled along.
